Blue Sky Day in Southwest Harbor…The wedding of Allison & Dan

What a treat when I saw this classic Southwest Harbor Maine wedding land on my desk. Allison & Dan’s wedding at the beautiful Claremont Hotel just made me smile.  And Allisons excitement and enthusiasm for sharing her wedding was contagious!  Robin Roemer’s swoon worthy photography made me feel like I was a guest at their wedding. The bold orange and blue palette popped right away for me.  And the handmade napkins and table decor made by Allison’s mom brings special meaning to the entire day…Allison was very thankful to have her family contribute in meaningful ways.  Dan’s mom hand collected all the nautical elements for the rehearsal dinner, which was held at sunset under a tent at a private home in Bar Harbor.  Dan grew up spending Summers in Bar Harbor, and it was a natural choice for their once in a lifetime day.Perfect mix of old and new…Tiffany band for Dan and for her band–stones from Allison’s great-grandmother in a custom setting by Brian Gavin Diamonds. Ivory lace dress by Jim Hjelm evokes a timeless, romantic quality.Allisons veil was made by her mother..another nice hand made touch.  I am really loving the muted palette of her details, combined with bright/poppy palette of reception.Allison and Dan had a “first look” private moment–an intimate moment that not only lets your groom see you for the first time in complete privacy, but really gives you time to do some quality portrait sessions and enjoy the entire cocktail hour.  Some couples think the dramatic “aisle moment” packs the most punch, but as you can see from above–being alone creates the most memorable moment of the entire day sometimes.Lynne Valeri of Video Design Wedding Films is “one of the best decisions I made on my wedding day”  according to Allison (besides Dan, the groom…ahem.).  “I think hiring Lynne, who shoots absolutely beautiful HD films, to document the day was the best, most unexpected treat. From the beginning we wanted to get a top-quality photographer, but it hadn’t occurred to us to think about a video until I stumbled on one of her films from another Maine wedding several months beforehand.  It was very subtly and artistically done, and so captured the the feeling of the day, which reflected the beauty of the photos as well.  As Lynne says, it is definitely an investment, but more than worth it. “  Click here to watch the highlights of their day at Video Design.Another decision Allison was happy with, was having the make up team come to the hotel–it allowed her and the girls “to conserve energy” and made the day less complicated and more enjoyable.Isn’t Allison looking oh so Jackie Kennedy meets super-model in that middle photo!  Iconic moment caught by Robin Roemer.Hand done calligraphy is a luxury I wish more couples would consider!  In this day and age of lolcat texts and e-mail–there is a time for this kind of care–and it’s a wedding!!  Contact Liz Roessler in details section below–I bet it’s one of those details you won’t regret (and ps…your guest will love receiving it and look forward even more to the fete that awaits…great invites create great expectations!).Allison had one interesting bit of advice for couples regarding photography:  “I wouldn’t waste too much energy/time/money on are posed family photos, which though beautiful, were much less important than I thought they’d be – get a photographer who has a great eye and will capture the right unposed shots, and be sure s/he knows which people are most important.”  I couldn’t agree more!   Get the must have family photos (4-8 max) and let your photographer document the day as it unfolds naturally…Robin Roemer achieved this beautifully. The Claremont is one of those majestic inns that made (and make!) Bar Harbor the must visit spot…we can see why it’s still so popular for weddings–look at that view!  Quintessential Maine.  Dan chose this spot long ago…and when he took Allison to view The Claremont for the first time he said “well, OF COURSE, we’re getting married here–look at it!”  He has a point.Allison’s mom grew herbs all Summer long to flank the ceremony site–and that tied in with thyme/rosemary themed invite suite (also designed by mom!!!)…Chelcey Dunham of Fleurishes “drove all over Maine to find the fullest potted herbs for the centerpieces–which our guests were thrilled to take home and re-plant.”  What I wouldn’t give to step into that tent and savor the aroma.  It adds a rustic, culinary touch perfect for this self proclaimed “foodie” couple (they honeymooned in Napa and the famous French Laundry!!).  Details that reflect you as a couple make the whole day more meaningful.  Keep that in mind when selecting wedding creatives too (like Chelcey  and mom in this case). When we asked the couple about advice for choosing a Maine wedding…they  had this to say:  “Maine is so dramatically beautiful that it means you get amazing impact with minimal decor. Between the sunset on Friday night, beautiful harbor and mountain views, and even the full moon over the water, the focus for our event was on the setting, the people and the atmosphere, with really  personal details. It was also a weekend away in the best sense. People could hike, bike, kayak, or just sit on the porch, and our guests really took advantage of Acadia National Park and all the surrounding diversions. By the end of the weekend our friends were planning another weekend there on our first anniversary – whether we wanted to join or not!Ok…when Allison described the cake by Janice Strout of Celebration Cakes…I think I literally started drooling on my keyboard…it has three layers..brace yourself…a Lavender Soaked Vanilla Cake with Lavender Buttercream layer and a Chocolate Espresso Ganache layer (that layer was for coffee hound Dan), and a Lemon Cake with Blackberry Filling layer.  Ok, it’s happening again..drool.  Chelcey Dunham of Fleurishes adorned the cake with those orange flowers…swoon all over.Dj Jeff Erwin set the tone and helped coordinate the reception–Allison called it an awesome party.  Congratulations Allison & Dan…and thanks for sharing your wedding with Something Blue!Things we love about Allison & Dan’s picture perfect Southwest Harbor wedding…
